Castellers: live human towers at the Catalan event

Imagen
Castellers levantando una torre humana en un evento temático Catalán

The castells are the moment nobody forgets at the Catalan themed event. A castellers group builds human towers live, part of Catalonia's cultural heritage, while our team explains to guests how they are built and what each part means.

There are many kinds of castells: from the simple 4-storey pillar, with one person per level, up to 10-storey towers. For events we usually suggest a 7 de 8: 8 storeys high and 7 people per level, crowned by the enxaneta.

  • Performance length: about 2 hours, with several castells.
  • Participation: guests can join the pinya, the base of the tower.
  • Requirement: enough headroom if it is held indoors.
  • As team building: a castells workshop where teams build their own tower.

Giants, big-heads and traditional Catalan music

Imagen

The town festival comes to the event with the ball de gegants: a pair of 4-metre giants parade and dance to traditional music. Our pair traces its origin back to Roman times, when Mataró, one of Catalonia's oldest towns, was founded.

  • Live music: 6 gralles (shawms), a timbal de llautó and a bass drum accompany the parade.
  • Capgrossos: two big-head figures who dance alongside the giants and interact with guests.
  • Dalí host: an actor dressed as Salvador Dalí leads guests from one act to the next and gets them involved; he speaks English.
  • Context: our team tells stories and anecdotes about the origin of each tradition.

Correfocs and trabucaires: the fire of the Catalan themed event

Imagen

The correfoc (fire run) is the most intense tradition of the Catalan themed event. Drums announce that the devils are coming and then a group of 15 to 20 devils dances among sparks to the beat of drums, timbales and gralla.

  • Format: 2 sets of 10 to 15 minutes, or a longer dance of around an hour and a half.
  • Participation: guests can join the correfoc if they are fully covered in spark-resistant clothing.
  • Trabucaires: blunderbuss salvos with gunpowder, typical of Catalan street festivals.
  • Adaptable: the route is fully adjusted to the venue.

Both shows need outdoor space and permission to use gunpowder; we check this with you before the programme is finalised.

Mechanical Catalan donkey and Catalan culture photocall

To get everyone involved, the classic mechanical bull becomes a mechanical Catalan donkey, another icon of Catalonia that always brings laughs and photos.

  • Catalan donkey: 3 hours of use with a technician who sets the intensity and speed for each guest.
  • Catalan photocall: a 3 × 2 metre PVC backdrop on a metal frame, with the senyera flag and other icons, available throughout the event.
  • Props for guests and photos with the devils, castellers and big-heads, encouraged by the host.
  • Bar games: the Catalan or Córdoba table football completes the leisure area.

More products to complete the Catalan event

Charcuterie, wine tasting, fire shows for indoor venues and giant games that suit a Catalan street festival and can be added to the same quote.

Catalan themed event dress code and props

No costume is needed, but a hint in the invitation helps guests get into the festival spirit:

  • Colours: red and yellow, the colours of the senyera, or white with a red sash, like the castellers.
  • Accessories: barretina cap, neck scarf and espadrilles.
  • For the correfoc: anyone who wants to run with the devils needs long sleeves, long trousers, a cap or scarf on the head and closed shoes, all in cotton.

There are themed props at the photocall for anyone who arrives without any.

Catering and bar for the Catalan themed event

Catalan food is part of the story. To eat, cocktail or dinner formats with local produce:

  • Gourmet charcuterie cart with cured meats, pa amb tomàquet (bread with tomato) and cheeses.
  • A cava toast to close the performances.
  • Team wine tasting as an activity before dinner.

If the client already has a caterer, we coordinate with them to fit each tradition between courses.

How to adapt the Catalan event to each client

  • Incentive or international group: full programme with castells, giants, correfoc and the Dalí host explaining every tradition in English.
  • Conference or fair: short sets of giants and big-heads in the exhibition area plus a Catalan photocall.
  • Company dinner: castells before dinner, an outdoor correfoc afterwards and the Catalan donkey during the party.
  • Team building: castells or batucada workshop to work as a team.
  • Wedding: the couple's entrance with giants and gralles, and a castell during the cocktail hour.

Space, set-up and staff for the Catalan event

Each tradition has its own requirements, so the ideal is to combine an outdoor area with a room or marquee:

  • Castells: enough headroom for the chosen tower and firm ground; the number of storeys is adapted to the space.
  • Correfoc and trabucaires: outdoors, gunpowder permit and a safety distance from the audience.
  • Giants and big-heads: work indoors and outdoors; they only need room to parade.
  • Catalan donkey and photocall: a clear area of a few metres and a nearby socket.
  • Staff: the groups with their musicians, the donkey technician and the host.

Around 80% of our events take place outside Barcelona: Madrid, Valencia, Seville, Zaragoza or Vigo.

Catalan street festival for companies at Sant Joan or Sant Jordi

Living tradition

A Catalan street festival for companies brings the atmosphere of a town in celebration to the hotel or country house: gegants dancing, capgrossos among the guests and the colla building human towers. If your event falls on dates such as Sant Joan or Sant Jordi, the theme connects with what the city is living those days.

For groups visiting Barcelona, it is the best Catalan cultural experience for foreigners: in one evening they understand what they see around the city during the trip. At a company dinner in a masia, the mix of castells, cava and local produce feels authentic and warm. And as an activity for conferences, it breaks the routine of talks in a way nobody forgets.

  • Parties on festive dates such as Sant Joan, Sant Jordi or La Mercè, with gegants, capgrossos and live castells.
  • Foreign groups in Barcelona who want to understand the traditions they will see around the city on their trip.
  • Dinners in Catalan masias, with cava, local produce and a mechanical Catalan donkey so everyone joins in.
  • Activities for conference delegates looking for a local, hands-on plan between working sessions.
