What body painting is
Body painting is a form of temporary body art in which the human body becomes a living canvas.
Unlike tattooing, with which it is often confused, body painting lasts only a few hours — or at most a few weeks, in the case of mehndi or henna — and many of its works are considered fine art. In the second half of the 20th century, the search for new visual forms revived this ancient practice and opened up a space where the body is treated as a support for art.
How hiring body paint works
The bodypainting artist paints one or more models with the chosen design. There are two options:
- Option 1: leave the models half-finished so the artist continues during the event and guests watch the process.
- Option 2: have the bodypaints completed before the event starts, so the finished result is there from the first moment.

Body painting for trade fairs, stands and product launches
Art that sells
If you want to hire a body painting artist in Barcelona for a corporate event, think of it as living advertising. A model painted in your brand colours stops people in busy aisles and turns body painting for trade fair stands into a real visitor magnet. It is hard to walk past a work of art that breathes.
At a product launch, the design can recreate the packaging, the logo or the campaign slogan, and the moment the model is revealed becomes the highlight of the presentation. At company parties and gala dinners it works as an artistic welcome that sets the theme for the whole night. Tell us your idea, the venue and the audience, and we will put together a proposal with artist, models and a bespoke design.
- Trade fair stands: a model painted with your corporate identity who draws visitors and multiplies photos with your brand.
- Product presentations: body painting in the colours and logo of the launch, perfect for the big reveal moment.
- Gala dinners: live body art as a guest welcome at company parties and corporate anniversary celebrations.
- Events across Spain: a body painter for your event in Madrid, Valencia or any city, with all materials included.

A history of body art
Every major society, past or present, has had its own culture of body art. How we decorate the body tells others who we are: around the world, many people use their skin as a living canvas to represent experience, courage, status, beauty, protection, fertility or transformation.
Ritual body art. Body painting with clay and natural pigments existed in most tribal cultures, and is still used today among indigenous peoples in Australia, New Zealand, the Pacific islands, Africa, India and Japan. It was tied to rites of passage — puberty, coming of age, marriage, death — to preparation for hunting or war, and to spiritual ritual, and it also marked a person's standing within the group.
1960-1980: a new art form. Around 1960, artists sought new, provocative, shocking forms of expression. Viennese Actionism — Günter Brus, Otto Mühl, Hermann Nitsch, Rudolf Schwarzkogler — was active from 1960 to 1971 alongside Fluxus and the happening. Verushka (Vera von Lehndorff) can be considered the mother of contemporary body painting, and Yves Klein's blue anthropometries and fire paintings are another key part of this story.
After 1980: contemporary body painting. Fine art, fashion, commercial work, competitions, shows and performances: the branches the discipline splits into today.
Body painting as contemporary art
Many critics dispute body painting as a legitimate contemporary art form: because the works are temporary, they question its value and argue that skin cannot replace canvas.
The practice, however, is more complex and has a rich history. Mehndi, or henna, goes well beyond tattooing, and contemporary artists have taken it into galleries: China's Liu Bolin, who paints himself to blend into settings around Beijing in response to the demolition of whole districts, and Australia's Emma Hack, who paints women against wallpaper, turning their bodies into murals. Both sell their work at auction, at high prices.
In the end it comes down to quality, aesthetics and concept: when a body painting practice respects those standards, there's no reason to dismiss it as part of contemporary art.
