What a storyteller for children's events is

Storytelling is an ancient, valuable art found the world over. Storytellers develop their own talents, apply specific techniques and perform a story for an audience, usually children.

Children of every age love hearing about a hero or a villain, a giant or a dragon, as long as there's a happy ending.

How the storyteller's performance works

  • The storyteller arrives at the venue with their materials and props.
  • A seating area is set out, indoors or outside.
  • The storyteller tells an absorbing tale, drawing on the children's imagination.
  • The telling can include puppets, songs and music composed for the piece, depending on the story.
  • The show runs 40 to 60 minutes and can be extended with breaks.

Why book a storyteller?

Stories fire a child's limitless imagination, natural curiosity and appetite for learning. You feel it instinctively reading a great story to a child, or remembering being read to yourself.

  • It engages rather than winds up: the storyteller's aim is to activate children's imaginations, not to send them wild.
  • It teaches values: stories carry morals and lessons without anyone noticing.
  • It suits any space: all you need is seating, indoors or out.
  • An art worth preserving in a digitally saturated age: live storytelling is nothing like a screen.

What to expect from a storytelling show

A child doesn't just hear the story: they live it. In their imagination they become the hero with the courage to fight the dragon and save the day, picturing the characters and the world of the tale.

Unlike most performances, the storyteller interacts with the audience on several levels, and audiences who get drawn into the story have far more fun.

Our programmes are built on absorbing narratives: an island, say, where two children wake from a nap to find singing animals, a friendly wizard and pirates. The storyteller teaches them that to break the pirate spell cast over the island, they must first learn not to be afraid.

A history of oral storytelling

Storytelling connects people across space and time: it can make us laugh or cry, and it can make us wiser. As long as there have been people, there have been stories, from the paintings in the Lascaux caves to the tales told at bedtime.

Stories began in the oral tradition — passed on by being heard and retold — and were only later written down, though we still love hearing them aloud. The difference is simple: a storyteller focuses on the audience, while a reader also has to focus on the book.

We're surrounded by stories: the news, songs, films, school lessons, or what you tell a friend about your day. Some have lasted hundreds or thousands of years and are still told: Māui, the three little pigs, Anansi, the tortoise, the gingerbread man. All of them have taught us how to live — and not only the children.

What events and settings suit a storyteller

Our storytellers work with a wide range of audiences and settings:

  • Weddings and communions
  • Children's parties and birthdays
  • Libraries and school theatres
  • Street and municipal events for town halls
  • Corporate keynote events and cultural festivals
  • Cultural centres and care homes

Storytellers for corporate family days and shopping centres

Families and companies

At a corporate family day, parents enjoy themselves more when they know their children are entertained and engaged. A storyteller for corporate events creates a calm corner within the day, where little ones live an adventure while the adults chat. A magical pause in the middle of the bustle.

Shopping centres at Christmas or during back-to-school campaigns schedule storytelling sessions to attract families and extend their visit. It also works in hotels with kids’ clubs and at book launches or bookshops. If you want to hire a storyteller in Barcelona or another city, tell us the age of the audience and the kind of story. We choose the narrator who fits best.

  • Corporate family days: a story corner for employees’ children while the adults enjoy the rest of the event.
  • Retail Christmas campaigns: storytelling sessions in shopping centres that attract families and fill the kids’ area.
  • Hotels and kids’ clubs: a calm holiday afternoon activity that parents really appreciate.
  • Book fairs and bookshops: live storytelling that brings reading closer to young children in a fun way.

Storyteller price

If you're looking for a storyteller, the storyteller's price rests mainly on these factors: whether you want a bespoke tale, how long the telling lasts, who it's aimed at — children, adults, ages — where it takes place (street, theatre, communion, wedding, children's party, library), which city it's in and for how many days. With all of that we put together a tailored quote.

How to book a storyteller

Every storyteller is different, so to pick the right one we need to know:

  • The venue.
  • How long the event runs.
  • How many children are expected.
  • The date.
  • The kind of story you'd like told.

With that we check availability and go ahead with the booking. Set-up is minimal: a seating area is enough, plus sound if the space is large so the voice carries.

  • when (date and time);
  • where (exact address) and who to talk to there;
  • the number of children and the type of story you want;
  • who to invoice (tax details).

Cancellation: where the causes are justified, the refund of the payment is considered under the terms that have been agreed.

Frequently asked questions

What is a storyteller for children's events and how does it work?

A storyteller is a narrator who tells the children a story live, with music, puppets and songs depending on the tale. We set up a seating area, indoors or outdoors, and the storyteller engages the children to spark their imagination without over-exciting them.

What ages and events is the storyteller suitable for?

The storyteller is designed for children aged 5 to 12 at birthdays, communions, weddings with children, fairs and family days. We also take the storyteller to libraries, schools and town councils. The story can be told in Spanish or in Catalan, as you prefer.

Can the story be personalised with the children's names?

Yes. The storyteller can personalise the story with the children's names and a theme of your choice. There is also a staged option with table puppets and another with Peg Dolls puppets and an art workshop, to extend the experience.

What does the storyteller need to perform at my event?

Just a seating area for the children, indoors or outdoors. The storyteller needs no electricity: the narrator arrives at the venue with their own materials and props. We work from Barcelona and take the storyteller anywhere in Spain.
