Do you need the perfect voice to keep the plot of a play, a documentary, a dramatic performance or a film engaging for viewers? Or do you need an actor to captivate children at a party with tales of adventure and fantasy? Storytellers often entertain audiences in solo shows, appear in a play or a live performance, or are voice actors who are off stage.
What is a storyteller?
Children of all ages love stories. They love to hear about a hero or a villain, a giant or a dragon as long as it has a happy ending. Whatever the theme of the story, the child is excited to have someone read them a story.
Storytelling is an ancient and valuable art that spans the whole world. Storytelling artists develop their own storytelling talents, apply storytelling techniques, create storytelling guides and perform a story for an audience, usually children.
Storytelling and entertainment go hand in hand. And the timeless stories of Cinderella, Thumbelina and Rapunzel delight generation after generation. If you are looking to recreate the same magic around your event
We believe that stories can change the world.
Stories ignite a child's boundless imagination, innate curiosity and passion for learning. You can feel it intuitively when you read a great story with your child, or remember that feeling of being read to when you were little. We believe that growing up in a world of books can make a difference, and that storytelling is a vital art, one that, in our digitally saturated age, deserves and demands preservation.
What should I expect from a storyteller at a storytelling event?
A child does not just listen to the story, they experience the story. In a child's imagination, they are the hero with all the courage to fight the dragon or the beast and save the day. They can see in their mind, as the story unfolds, what the characters in the book would look like. A child looks into their imagination at what their hero's world would be like.
Storytelling is a complicated thing. People have tried to define what "storytelling" is. It can include music, puppets, several narrators, props, improvisation and more. Likewise, each storytelling event is a little different. Some feature a group of master storytellers who explore themes such as fools and wise men, tales of the sea, scary stories, etc. Others feature one or two storytellers, for an in-depth show. Another presents up to 5 tellers in a big show…. At a festival, theatres, etc. where a certain set of storytellers will take the stage.
In general, storytelling events are held at weekends and in the evenings, Seating is a portable chair, indoors or outdoors, with snacks at hand (or for sale) and the show lasts from 40 to 60 minutes, although it can be extended if desired with breaks for the audience.
If a festival is held, it can last up to 2-3 days, but you can come and go whenever you like. Unlike most performance-type events, Storytellers interact on several levels with the audience, and storytelling audiences who "get involved" in the stories are really fun.
They meet fantastic individuals in incredible stories and then you'll say, wow, I have to tell my friends about this! and might share some of your own.
Our storytelling programmes feature a fascinating narrative for children. The story, for example, takes place on an island where two children wake up after a nap. On the island they come across singing animals, a friendly wizard and pirates! The storyteller teaches the children that to break the pirate spell that has been cast over the island, they must first learn not to be afraid. But will it be enough to break the spell?
The show's narrative is full of the storyteller's magic, as well as puppets, songs and music specially composed for the act, depending on the story being told.
The storyteller's approach is to engage children's vibrant imagination rather than simply exciting them and making them go wild during the party.
Why not hire a storyteller to liven up and enrich your next event? Our storytellers work with a wide range of audiences and contexts, from schools and libraries to corporate keynote talks, festivals, cultural events, elderly care and more.
History of storytelling by a storyteller
Storytelling brings people around the world together across space and time.
Telling stories can make us laugh or cry, telling stories can make us wise, stories can be short or long, old or new.
Storytelling is for everyone!
even by listening to someone read it. A storyteller focuses on the audience, while a reader must also focus on the book.
As long as there have been people, there have been stories. From the stories told in paintings on the ancient walls of the Lascaux caves (Google it!) to the bedtime stories told to small children, stories make up our history and guide our future.
You are surrounded by stories every day. The news on television, radio and in newspapers is nothing but stories. The Bible and other religious books are full of stories. The lessons teachers give at school are often stories. Songs tell stories. Pictures tell stories. Films tell stories. Comedians build their routines out of stories. When you tell a friend something that happened to you, you are telling a story. Can you think of the last story you heard? Think carefully: it might be something you just heard a few minutes ago!
Some stories have lasted hundreds and even thousands of years and are still being told. Stories began with the oral tradition, which means they were passed on by being heard and told. Later, people began to write the stories down, but we still love to hear stories told out loud.
Stories are powerful. They can teach morals, the values by which the author of the story believes people should live. They can teach history. They can entertain us. They can make us think about things in a way we never have before. They can make us laugh. They can make us cry. Storytelling is a big part of what connects people to one another.
Stories are part of every culture. Stories about our country and its history help us feel proud of our nation. Stories about our ancestors teach us where we come from and the things we have in common with the other people around us.
You probably have your own favourite stories. Perhaps they are stories about your family that you hear from your grandparents. Perhaps they are books you have read over and over again. What is your favourite story?
A man called Robert Moss said that Australian Aboriginal people believe that important stories always look for the right person to tell them, hunting for the storyteller like an animal hunting its prey. Do you think there might be a story looking for you?
Stories can be about what you did today or last year, about what your family did weeks or years ago, about what you dream of doing, about what makes you laugh, about what you have imagined ...
Maui, the three little pigs, Anansi, Yi, the rabbit, the tortoise, the rajah and his three daughters, the cat, the clever butterfly, wise or wicked old women and kings, brave princes, princesses and woodcutters, the gingerbread man. Their stories have been amazing and fun for us, and not just for children! - and have been teaching us how to live for hundreds, even thousands, of years.
How do I hire your storyteller?
First of all, EXCELLENT! You are thinking of hiring a storyteller! Bless you, spread the word and keep the faith! Before you pick up the phone, here are a few things to consider. Every storyteller is different, but let's make a few assumptions. If you are going to hire a storyteller, this is a business-type decision. So, just like any business, you are hiring a worker to come and carry out a certain task. Storytelling artists are the most flexible people there are in terms of abilities.
Part of that comes from the art itself, as you can weave a story around almost anything. If you are going to hire a storyteller, we will need to know the details
- Event venue
- Event duration
- Number of children expected
- Event day
- Type of story you would like told
Once we have the main details we can check availability, and at that point we will go ahead and book the day.
Storytelling prices and quote
The price of storytelling will depend mainly on the following,
- Do we need to create a tailor-made story?
- Length of the storyteller's performance
- Who is the show for? (children, adults, ages…)
- Where will the storytelling take place? (the street, theatres, communions, weddings, children's parties, libraries, …)
- In which city will the event take place?
- How many days
Once we have all the details we can prepare a tailor-made storytelling quote and offer a price depending on the characteristics
